UnfoldPDF is developed and operated by JDE Labs (“JDE Labs,” “we,” “us,” or “our”), a trading name of JDE Global.

This Privacy Policy explains how UnfoldPDF accesses, uses, stores, and protects information when you use the UnfoldPDF web service, our website, and related services.

UnfoldPDF is a web-based document conversion service. To convert a document, you upload a PDF to our servers, where it is processed and turned into an editable Word document or extracted text that you can download. This means that, unlike a purely local application, the documents you choose to convert are transmitted to and temporarily processed by systems we operate or that operate on our behalf.

1. Our Privacy Approach

UnfoldPDF is designed around several privacy principles:

  • Your documents remain your documents. Uploading a file does not transfer ownership of it, or of its contents, to JDE Labs.
  • We process uploaded documents only to provide the conversion you requested and to operate, secure, and support the service.
  • Uploaded documents and converted outputs are retained only for a limited period and are then deleted.
  • We do not read your documents for any purpose other than automated processing, except where necessary to investigate a support request you make, a security incident, or suspected abuse of the service.
  • UnfoldPDF does not use the content of your documents to train artificial intelligence or machine-learning models.
  • UnfoldPDF does not sell your documents or personal information.
  • UnfoldPDF does not use the content of your documents for advertising.
  • We aim to collect only information reasonably necessary to operate, bill, support, secure, and improve UnfoldPDF.

2. Documents You Upload

UnfoldPDF requires access to the PDF documents you choose to upload in order to provide its core functionality.

Depending on how you use UnfoldPDF, the service may access:

  • the PDF file itself, including any text layer, images, and embedded fonts;
  • scanned or image-only pages contained in the PDF;
  • document metadata such as title, author, creation and modification dates, and producing application;
  • file names, file sizes, and page counts;
  • the language or languages detected in the document;
  • any conversion settings you select, such as layout mode or export format.

You are responsible for ensuring that you have the right to upload and convert any document you submit to UnfoldPDF, including documents that contain information about other people.

Uploading a document to UnfoldPDF does not transfer ownership of the document to JDE Labs.

3. How Documents Are Processed

When you upload a document, it is transmitted over an encrypted connection to servers operated by JDE Labs or by infrastructure providers acting on our behalf. Processing is automated.

Processing may include:

  • reading the PDF structure and any existing text layer;
  • rendering pages to images where text recognition is required;
  • recognising text on scanned or image-based pages;
  • detecting the language or languages present in the document;
  • detecting tables, columns, images, headers, footers, and other layout elements;
  • reconstructing the document as an editable Word (DOCX) file or as extracted text;
  • generating a preview or download link for the converted output.

Processing is performed by software. JDE Labs staff do not routinely view the content of uploaded documents. Limited human access may occur where necessary to investigate a support request you have made, a security incident, a service failure, or suspected misuse, and is restricted to personnel who need that access for the purpose in question.

4. Text Recognition and Layout Analysis

UnfoldPDF may use optical character recognition (OCR), language detection, and layout-analysis models to convert scanned and image-based pages into editable text and to reconstruct tables and page structure.

These processes may generate intermediate information derived from your document, such as:

  • page images rendered from the PDF;
  • recognised text and confidence scores;
  • detected language and script information;
  • bounding boxes and structural descriptions of tables, columns, and images;
  • font-selection decisions for multilingual content.

Intermediate information exists only to produce the converted output. It is treated the same way as the uploaded document and is deleted on the same schedule.

Text recognition and layout analysis are automated and are not designed to identify individuals, to make decisions about you, or to profile you. Results vary with scan quality and document complexity, and converted output should be reviewed before it is relied upon.

5. Converted Output Files

UnfoldPDF produces converted output files, such as a Word (DOCX) document or an extracted text file, based on the document you uploaded.

Converted output:

  • is generated solely from the document you uploaded and the settings you chose;
  • is made available to you for download;
  • is stored temporarily so that you can download it;
  • is deleted on the same schedule as the uploaded document.

Once you download a converted file, the copy on your own device is under your control and is not covered by this Privacy Policy.

6. Retention and Deletion of Documents

Uploaded documents, intermediate processing data, and converted output files are retained only for a limited period necessary to complete the conversion and to allow you to download the result.

After that period, these files are automatically deleted from our active systems.

Where the service offers a way to delete a document or conversion earlier, using that control removes the associated files from our active systems according to the service’s deletion behaviour.

Copies of files may persist for a short additional period in backups or in caches maintained by our infrastructure providers before being overwritten or expired according to their normal schedules.

We may retain limited, non-content records about a conversion, such as the time it occurred, the file size, the page count, the settings used, and whether it succeeded, in order to operate, bill, secure, and improve the service. These records do not include the content of your document.

7. Account Information

If UnfoldPDF offers user accounts, creating an account may involve processing:

  • your name;
  • your email address;
  • a password, stored in hashed form;
  • your organisation, where provided;
  • account preferences and settings;
  • plan, subscription, or usage-allowance information;
  • a history of conversions associated with the account, limited to non-content records as described in section 6.

Account information is used to authenticate you, provide the service, apply your plan or usage allowance, communicate with you about the service, and provide support.

8. Information You Provide to JDE Labs

You may choose to provide information to JDE Labs when you:

  • create an account or sign up for early access;
  • purchase or subscribe to UnfoldPDF;
  • contact us for support;
  • submit a contact form on our website;
  • report a problem or send feedback;
  • participate in a survey, beta program, or research study;
  • subscribe to product updates.

This information may include:

  • your name;
  • your email address;
  • your company or organisation;
  • the contents of your message;
  • documents or screenshots you choose to attach to a support request.

If you attach a document to a support request so that we can investigate a conversion problem, we will use that document only to investigate and resolve your request, and we will delete it when the request is closed unless you ask us to retain it or we are required to keep it.

9. Subscriptions and Payments

If you purchase a paid plan, UnfoldPDF may process limited information necessary to administer it, such as:

  • the plan or subscription you selected;
  • the billing email address;
  • the start, renewal, and end dates of the subscription;
  • usage counts relevant to your plan, such as the number of pages or documents converted;
  • invoice and receipt records.

Payments are processed by third-party payment providers. Those providers process your payment card or other payment details under their own privacy policies. JDE Labs does not receive or store your full payment card number.

10. Usage Information and Service Logs

To operate and secure the service, our servers may automatically record information such as:

  • IP address;
  • browser type and version;
  • operating system;
  • the date and time of requests;
  • the pages or features of the service you used;
  • conversion events, including file size, page count, settings, processing time, and outcome;
  • error messages and status codes;
  • the address of the page that referred you to the service.

Service logs do not include the content of your documents.

We use this information to keep the service running, to detect and prevent abuse, to enforce usage limits, to diagnose problems, and to understand how the service is used.

11. Diagnostics and Error Reports

When a conversion fails or the service encounters an error, UnfoldPDF may record diagnostic information such as:

  • the stage of processing at which the error occurred;
  • the type of error;
  • technical details about the document structure, such as page count, PDF version, or whether text recognition was required;
  • software version information.

Diagnostic records are designed to exclude the content of your document. Where a specific document is needed to reproduce a problem, we will use it only with your permission, for example when you attach it to a support request.

12. Analytics

If UnfoldPDF uses application or website analytics, they may be used to understand matters such as:

  • which features are used most;
  • which layout options are commonly chosen;
  • how often conversions succeed or fail;
  • where users encounter difficulty in the interface;
  • overall usage volumes and trends.

Analytics are aggregated or pseudonymised where practical and do not include the content of your documents.

13. Website Information

When you visit a JDE Labs or UnfoldPDF website, standard web technologies may automatically process information such as:

  • IP address;
  • browser type;
  • device type;
  • operating system;
  • referring website;
  • pages viewed;
  • date and time of access.

This information is used to operate, secure, and improve the website.

14. Cookies

UnfoldPDF and our website may use cookies or similar technologies for purposes such as:

  • keeping you signed in;
  • protecting forms against automated abuse;
  • remembering your preferences, such as a chosen layout option;
  • measuring how the website and service are used.

You can control cookies through your browser settings. Disabling cookies that are essential to the service, such as session cookies, may prevent parts of UnfoldPDF from working.

UnfoldPDF’s document conversion functionality does not depend on advertising cookies.

15. Information We Do Not Sell

JDE Labs does not sell:

  • your uploaded documents;
  • your converted output files;
  • text or data extracted from your documents;

16. Artificial Intelligence and Model Training

UnfoldPDF may use machine-learning models to provide features such as:

  • text recognition on scanned and image-based pages;
  • language and script detection;
  • table detection and reconstruction;
  • layout analysis, including columns, images, and text placement.

JDE Labs does not use the content of documents you upload to UnfoldPDF to train artificial intelligence or machine-learning models.

Where we improve our models, we do so using data we are licensed to use for that purpose, synthetic data, or documents that users have expressly and separately agreed to contribute for that purpose.

17. Sharing of Information

We may share information with third parties in the following limited circumstances:

  • Infrastructure providers that host the service and store files temporarily on our behalf;
  • Payment providers that process subscriptions and payments;
  • Email and communication providers used to send account, support, and service messages;
  • Analytics and error-monitoring providers, limited to non-content information as described above;
  • Professional advisers, such as lawyers, accountants, and auditors, where necessary;
  • A successor organisation in the event of a merger, acquisition, or transfer of the business, subject to this Privacy Policy;
  • Authorities and other parties where required by law, as described in section 18.

Providers that process documents or personal information on our behalf are permitted to use that information only to provide their services to us, and are bound by contractual obligations to protect it.

We may disclose information where we reasonably believe it is necessary to:

  • comply with applicable law, regulation, legal process, or a governmental request;
  • enforce our terms of service;
  • detect, prevent, or address fraud, abuse, or security issues;
  • protect the security of UnfoldPDF;
  • protect the rights, property, or safety of JDE Labs, our users, or others.

19. Security

We use technical and organisational measures designed to protect information, including:

  • encryption of documents in transit between your browser and our servers;
  • access controls limiting who can reach systems that process documents;
  • automatic deletion of uploaded documents and converted output after a limited period;
  • logging and monitoring for unauthorised access.

No method of transmission or storage is completely secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security, and you should consider whether a document is appropriate to upload to any online service before submitting it.

20. Data Retention

We retain information for different periods depending on its type:

  • Uploaded documents, intermediate data, and converted output are retained for a limited period necessary to complete the conversion and allow download, and are then deleted, as described in section 6.
  • Account information is retained while your account is active and for a limited period afterwards, unless a longer period is required by law.
  • Billing records are retained for as long as required for accounting, tax, and legal purposes.
  • Service logs and diagnostics are retained for a limited period necessary for security, troubleshooting, and abuse prevention.
  • Support correspondence is retained for as long as needed to resolve your request and maintain a record of it.

21. Your Choices and Controls

Depending on the feature and your plan, you can control UnfoldPDF’s access and behaviour by:

Where required by applicable law, we take steps to ensure that international transfers are subject to appropriate safeguards.

24. Sensitive Content in Documents

The documents you convert may contain:

  • personal information about you or other people;
  • confidential business information;
  • financial, medical, legal, or other sensitive information;
  • information about children.

We process such content only as part of the automated conversion you request and handle it as described in this Privacy Policy. You are responsible for ensuring that you have the right to upload the document and that doing so complies with any obligations you have to others.

Using UnfoldPDF does not give you rights to documents or personal information that you do not otherwise possess.

25. Children’s Privacy

UnfoldPDF is a general-purpose and professional document conversion service and is not directed toward children.

We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children for the purpose of creating accounts or for advertising.

UnfoldPDF produces files intended to be opened in third-party applications such as Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or LibreOffice. What you do with a converted file in those applications, and any information those applications collect, is governed by their own terms and privacy policies.
